As well as supporting allergy sufferers AC also has a Corporate Members group providing regular, high-quality, up-to-date information about allergy and its effect on food companies and their customers. The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) recently issued its Guidance on Allergen Control and Consumer Information. The document gives best practice on the control of food allergens/gluten with particular reference to avoiding cross-contamination and using appropriate advisory labelling e.g. may contain.

The US Food & Drug Administration Threshold Working Group has issued a Draft Report on Approaches to Establish Thresholds for Major Food Allergens and for Gluten in Food.

Most serious allergic reactions happen outside the home, so food handlers need to be aware of the risks and trained to avoid problems. Hazel Gowland, who is nut allergic herself, has teamed up with other experts to produce a training pack for caterers and food handlers.

Clare Mills & colleagues at the Institute of Food Research, Norwich, maintain the Food Allergy Info web site. The site is filled with information on a number of EC-funded research programmes related to allergies and allergens and also incorporates the excellent Informall Allergen Database.

Food Allergy Support (FAS) was set up by David Reading to provide expert guidance, training and information to the food industry. David’s knowledge of food allergy is based on 16 years working with the Anaphylaxis Campaign, the UK charity set up after his daughter Sarah died from an allergic reaction to peanuts.
